Abstract: Landscape transformation through human building and construction activities has had the greatest influence on the soil component of the landscape. The extent of soil sealing or impervious surface area is one of the key indicators of environmental quality. In this contribution we present two methodical approaches of soil sealing assessment. The first one documents urbanization trends at national scale and the analysis is based on land cover flow urbanization (LCFU) derived from CORINE land cover data layers. Changes in the LCFU can be seen on a map using colours and their hues, to fulfil the role both of identification and classification. The second approach has focused on detail impervious surface coverage within land cover classes using very high resolution satellite data WorldView-2 and updated database of reference spatial data on national level - ZB GIS. The study area covers 40 km2 surrounding the town Trnava, Slovakia. Results of the soil sealing assessment provide useful inputs to planning and management activities at local scale.
