The analysis of methods of the maps creation and use on the Internet

Váňa, P.: The analysis of methods of the maps creation and use on the Internet. Kartografické listy, 2005, 13, 2 figs., 11 refs.

Abstract: The development of the Internet has brought new possibilities for the presentation of maps, though consequently this may bring some new problems. That is why ways of the maps creation should be adapted correspondingly. Moreover, other branches of digital cartography (for example, web cartography) started to develop. Web maps can be analysed from different points of view. Some maps created before can be then presented in the browser (static maps), some of them may be created directly form the data store according to the user's requirements (so called dynamic maps). Maps can be also evaluated from the viewpoint of additional functions they can provide (view-only maps and interactive maps), or according to the type of graphics used (raster maps and vector maps). At present, many kinds of maps exist, being created in different ways. Methods for their creation can be based on specific software, or different combinations of web technologies may be used. The article analyses various methods of the web maps creation, explaining their advantages and disadvantages as well as possibilities of such maps use.
