Influence of Spatial Effects on Perception of Pie Charts
Dušek, R.: Influence of Spatial Effects on Perception of Pie Charts. Kartografické listy, 2009, 17, 6 figs., 3 tabs., 5 refs.
Abstract: Spatial effects, so-called 3D charts, are currently used with still increasing frequency in graphic presentation for example for two-dimensional data. This trend appears also in cartography, especially in creation of diagrammatic maps. The content of the contribution is the overview of results of perception of pie charts with spatial effects. The contribution is a follow-up to the already carried out basic testing of some aspects of 3D effects, completes and extends the first test with similarly extensive new testing (approximately 220 respondents) focused on further effects. The overall results of both tests show that use of 3D effects in creation of pie charts can lead to distortion of the values perceived. The evaluation of tests reveals hardly removable influence that limits the possibilities of tests.
