Geospatial internet technologies for communication of geographic information

Hofierka, J.: Geospatial internet technologies for communication of geographic information. Kartografické listy, 2012, 20 (1).

Abstract: Over the last decade the geospatial applications have been strongly influenced by emerging new Internet technologies. Geographic information systems have transformed from desktop systems to a network-based technology. The most recent development in this area is represented by web mapping technologies, like Google Maps/Google Earth, Wikimapia, OpenStreetMap and others. These web-based mapping applications provide online mapping features based on the street maps, orthophotomaps and terrain maps supplemented by various multimedia and location-based features such as photographs, videos, webcams, wikipedia links or tracking capabilities. We summarize the current state of these technologies, analyze new possibilities for mapping and communication of geographic information.
