Extension of the map equations of the Mercator transverse cylindrical projection

Szatmári, D., Vajsáblová, M.: Extension of the map equations of the Mercator transverse cylindrical projection. Kartografické listy, 2012, 20 (1).

Abstract: The Mercator transverse cylindrical projection is applied in geodetic coordinate system UTM (Universal transverse Mercator). The aim of this paper is to perform a complete analysis of distortion and modify the formulas for the projection to achieve lower angular distortion on the edges of the standard meridian bands (with difference of longitude 6°) and non-standard meridian bands (with difference of longitude 9°). The scale distortion is many times larger for the extended non-standard meridian band despite of the modified formulas of the projection. As shown in our analysis it is possible to reduce the angular distortion by using the modified formulas of the projection, hence in light of projection of extended meridian band we recommend the using the modified map equations of the Mercator transverse cylindrical projection.
