Forest roads as object of forest thematic mapping and part of information systems

Tuček, J., Kardoš, M., Koreň, M., Smreček, R.: Forest roads as object of forest thematic mapping and part of information systems. Kartografické listy, 2013, 21 (1).

Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to analyze the current state of the collection, use and storage of information on forest road network. Create the information layer and database of forest road network for the purpose of forests accessibility, terrain and technological typing and selection and optimization of harvesting and transport technology. These approaches are validated on the experimental area of the Kriváň Forest Enterprise. The basic source of information for the proposed solution is the content of digital forestry map. Preliminary network was adjusted on the basis of orthophoto or field surveying. During the field survey there were measured new roads, not existing, unused and unusable, respectively destroyed roads have been deleted from the database. At the same time was recorded the status and quality of the road network using mobile GIS applications and GNSS. We recorded the road strengthening, damage, stability of the excavations and embankments, drainages and it’s type, technical equipment of the road and photo documentation. We have created a specific information system based on GIS, mobile geo-information technologies and system for the support of spatial decision support. In the area of interest, there is more than 2500 km of roads, of which about 47 %, which is nearly 1200 km, is located on forest land in the use of the enterprise Lesy SR. The length of the road network density produces 58.4 m/ha of forest roads. Created database in relation to other content of generated information system allows variable evaluation of the content and the calculation of additional and derived data. For the purpose of calculating the skidding distances and network analysis has been to every extracting site, assigned one or more node points, representing the exits on the hauling or public roads to the hauling places and also connections of skidding roads. On the area of interest there is located 390 hauling places. In the area of interest there is together 2556,87 km of roads. Of these, 1 193,85 km, representing almost 47 % of the total length, is situated on the lands in the use of forest enterprise Lesy SR s.e. The share of the roads on the land of unregistered or unknown owners is about 33 % with length of 843,28 km. Public roads in the state ownership create 10 %, forest roads on the lands of the other owners of forest 7 %. Roads that are owned by the cities and communes are represented by more than 3 %.
