Completing natural landscape map under condition of lack of reliable analytic data

Kolejka, J.: Completing natural landscape map under condition of lack of reliable analytic data. Kartografické listy, 2014, 22 (1).

Abstract: A lack of suitable analytic data for the construction of a natural landscape map is typical for waste areas sparsely settled by humans. The procedure of natural landscape map completing is demonstrated on the example of the Kobyay ulus (district) in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia, Siberia, Russian Federation). The map compilation is based on the application of a recommended simplified topographic base at the scale of 1 : 2,5 million with contourlines, drainage network and water bodies. Thematic data on soils and vegetation are available at the scale of 1 : 5 million (hand drown map app. 1:3 mil.), very simplified map on geology and tectonic. A high quality data set is represented by the Google Earth 3D model of the surveyed area. The map compillation was divided into consequence of 8 steps. Finally, 38 types of natural landscapes were identified and their hierarchical system of three importancy levels was constructed. Using appropriate cartographic symbols, the map was finalized both in two versions: black-and-white and colour. In the conclusion, the discussion about the procedures used was carried out.
