Verification and qualitative evaluation of the Urban Atlas layers in Slovakia

Szatmári, D., Kopecká, M., Feranec, J.: Verification and qualitative evaluation of the Urban Atlas layers in Slovakia. Kartografické listy, 2019, 27 (1).

Abstract: A significant European initiative in the field of urban monitoring is the implementation of Urban Atlas (UA) project under the GMES/Copernicus land monitoring services, initiated by the European Space Agency in 2009. The aim of UA was to generate comparable land cover/land use (LC/LU) data at the scale 1:10,000 for selected 305 European cities and their hinterland (Functional Urban Areas – FUA) for the year 2006 and 697 FUAs for the year 2012. The aim of this paper is the presentation of validation and qualitative assessment of UA layers within the project Framework service contract EEA/IDM/RO/16/009/Slovakia. The results show insufficient accuracy especially in the classes representing discontinuous urban fabric, herbaceous vegetation associations and complex cultivation patterns.
