Creation of the Olomouc region thematic atlas in the infographic design

Žejdlík, J., Vondráková, A.: Creation of the Olomouc region thematic atlas in the infographic design. Kartografické listy, 2022, 30 (1).

Abstract: Although infographics are currently a very popular way of data visualization in many areas, their connection to cartography is still rising. Infographics enable the enrichment of maps with additional information attractively and engagingly. In thematic atlases, the role of infographics is all the more important because the presentation of various qualitative and quantitative information in graphical form increases the information value of the map composition and, in some cases, can also reduce the volume of the information displayed directly on the map, making the map easier to read. The paper's main goal is to demonstrate the possibilities of using infographics in thematic atlases on the example of creating a thematic atlas of the Olomouc region and at the same time to point out different approaches to the creation of infographic map compositions. Emphasis is focused primarily on ensuring a dominant share of maps and maintaining strong content and graphic links between map and infographic elements. The presented approach, which also includes the formulation of principles for creating thematic maps and atlases with infographics, can be an inspiration for other cartographers. Cartography and infographics allow us to present a large amount of information in a simple and engaging way, complement each other well, and in the future, we can expect an increasing share of infographics in the created atlases.
