Abstract: The period of classic development of cartography characterised by manual and mechanised ways of creation and reproduction of maps has finished. Knowledge of long-term nature has been gathered and it is also hidden (included) in computer programmes. Without learning on classical knowledge it is impossible to create good maps even by computer technology. Scope and nature of cartographic knowledge require creation of terminological dictionaries, lexicons or encyclopedias. The concept of a brief practical lexicon of cartography is proposed and some essential criteria of its creation are formulated.
