The Hierarchical Cartographic Generalization for Alteration of the Zoom Scale in the Digital Environment

Staňek, K.: The Hierarchical Cartographic Generalization for Alteration of the Zoom Scale in the Digital Environment. Kartografické listy, 2001, 9, 2 tabs., 10 refs.

Abstract: Cartographic generalization is one of most complex task of the map design. During manipulation with maps in digital form, especial in 018 visualization, is above mentioned aspect insufficiently realized. According to demands on quick generating of cartographic output in GIS environment is necessary, for generalization rules implementation, to sort rules into hierarchical system according to its unavoidability. At the base level are rules for ensuring at least minimal readability of the map, at the highest level are included rules ensuring such level of correct interpretation such in analogue maps. This classification is necessary condition for realization of the cartographic zoom, i.e. increasing and decreasing of extent of the visualized area, with readability and pattern of visualized phenomena preservation. In paper is discussed general proposal for ensuring of the cartographic zoom for thematic maps in GIS environment.
