Abstract: Tools for creation of hillshaded visualizations of spatial data are available in many commercial GIS products. Process of visualisation creation is composed of the calculation of shading intensity from digital model of relief and the transformation of colours used for thematic information representation in accordance with shading intensity. Several approaches are available for accomplishing these steps, and selection of the most appropriate one is determined by character of used thematic data, local relief parameters and expected properties of final visualisation. Individual systems differ in way of implementation of these tools, used methods and also in demands on user skills.
