Abstract: The population and housing census is defined as counting (or benchmark) of the population in the territory of a country and in the country’s smallest geographical sub-territories together with information on a selected number of demographic and social characteristics of the total population. Therefore census is ideal for using technologies of geographical information system thereby cartographic methods. These are used at all stages of census – preparation, implementation and dissemination. In the first place they are used in territorial preparation. It is based on the Register of Enumeration Districts established in 1998. The most common outcomes are classifications, databases, shapefiles, lists, labels and maps of districts. Besides the above-mentioned territorial preparation, cartographic methods are also principally used for the actual dissemination stage. Thematic maps were regular part of publication of the census made in 2001. It is planned that for the 2011 census to develop methods of thematic mapping in the field migration and to attempt more complex data presentation in maps by web services and thematic atlas.
