Abstract: Map symbols have their own characteristics, graphic parameters and portrayal rules/definitions. Like the other portrayal catalogues, the Portrayal Catalogue of the Basic Database for the Geographic Information System (BD GIS) has also collecting the defined portrayal for a catalogue of features. The aim of the mentioned portrayal catalogue is to provide information about visualization of the spatially localized objects and their visualization rules. It is fully based on the latest version of the Catalogue of Classes Objects of the Basic Database for the Geographical Information System and compatible with the application Map Client, which is a web portrayal service. In this case this catalogue does not meet the requirements of the ISO standard 19117: Geographic information – Portrayal (2009). The Portrayal Catalogue of the Basic Database for the Geographic Information System was created in order to reach the unified visualization within the institutes of public authorities in Slovakia.
