Abstract: Article continue in the analysis map language theory based theory of map sign and his main attributes – graphic unit, denotation and position in the map. Denotation of the map sign as se-mantic aspect of map creation (cartographic interpretation) is no simple concept in the relation with map using (pragmatic aspect). In the article is denotation of map sign analysed from geoinformation science point of view – need formal description of map creation. Base of this analyse is definition of map sign semantic aspect as triple. In analysis of map syntax we will not use denotation but possibility of denotation (potential of denotation) named semantic refer-ence. Denotation (V) is complex of tree components: V = {fo, sr, va}, fo – designation function, sr – semantic reference, va – denotation attribute or item identifier. Designation function is couple collection [sr, va] determined by rules and principles of designation.
