Abstract: This paper focuses on procedures for the creation of trianguled irregular networks as a base for georelief model. It concentrates on the properties of triangle meshes generated by shape dependent triangulation, in particular on the most used Delaunay triangulation. Properties of these triangles are confronted with the requirements for optimal shape of a triangle for the modeled surface. We point to the negatives of shape optimized triangles. We separatly notice unaccuracy arising from the use of contour lines as input data. Wide-spread softwares use shape optimized triangles which result in inaccuracies in the developed models and offer limited opportunities to minimize them. Therefore, we recommend a data dependent triangulations which consider the shape of triangle for the optimal replacement of modeled surface. Characteristics of an object of modeling are taking into account during the creation of a model as opposed to shape dependent triangulation.
